It's clean; solar energy is one of the few clean carbon-free forms of energy available. It’s reliable; solar energy can provide energy in times of blackouts or peak usage and in rural areas where electricity is not available, all you need is a sunny spot to charge the battery with solar panels. It’s safe; eliminates the risk of fires and inhalation of harmful fumes.

The sun gives life to all things with its heat and light. The generation of solar energy began in the sun’s core almost one million years ago. Here, photons are constantly created through the fusion of atoms. When these photons are transmitted through space, we will eventually be able to harness their power.

It generally takes a photon over a million years to escape from the sun’s centre to its surface. After that they are sent hurtling out into space in all directions. Some of these packages of light and energy head directly to Earth.

Once the photons reach Earth, we must harness their energy in order to create electricity. This is done through the use of photovoltaic cells, which react with the photons. These PV cells are coated with a material, which displays the photovoltaic effect.

The photovoltaic effect is used to describe the process by which energy is created through use of certain materials when exposed to solar radiation or sunlight. These PV cells are stimulated by sunlight and produce direct current electricity. However, this energy must still be made useable.

Most appliances and electronics use alternating current or AC power, which differs from the direct current or DC power that is generated by solar panels. In order to transform this DC power into AC power, it is necessary to have a solar power inverter connected to your solar panels. This inverter allows the energy generated to be consumed, fed back into the grid - depending on what type of solar energy generating unit you have.

Once solar energy is converted into AC power, it is possible to use this energy to power your appliances, home, or even your business. If you have a grid tie solar system, the electricity you produce will be fed directly back into your local power grid. When you are producing electricity, any energy you consume will come directly from your solar system. Any excess will be fed directly back into the grid.

When you are not producing electricity, any electricity you consume will come directly from the power grid. If you have an off-grid solar system, then your system will have a rechargeable battery in the loop. This battery is charged by your solar cells and stores any excess energy, which guarantees that you will always be using the energy you generate yourself, and that you’ll always have energy as long as you produce sufficient amounts.

However, because of the even number of electrons, each silicon atom will have a full share, which leaves less room for free electrons to go. When energy is added to silicon, some of these electrons break free and look for holes left by other free electrons.

This movement of electrons is what actually generates electricity. The photons strike the PV cell and ideally, each photon will knock one electron free and send it searching for a hole to fill, thus conducting electricity. Because silicon has an even number of electrons, all modern solar cells use impure silicon as a way to free up extra electrons to conduct energy better.

Basic Electricity Calculations
  1. WATTS (electrical power) = AMPS (flow of electrons) X VOLTS (electrical force)
  2. Battery/Appliance Operating Times
  • Amp Hour (Ah) indicates the battery’s storage capacity over a 20-hour period.
  • To determine how many constant Amps the battery can output for 20 hours, divide the Ah rating by 20.
  • For example, if you have a 100Ah battery, it can deliver 5 Amps for 20 hours before it is fully discharged
  • (100 ÷ 20 = 5).
Charging

Ecoboxx units can be charged with either AC chargers (using the grid) or from solar panels.

Wall charging takes roughly 2 - 3 hours (may vary).

Solar charging times depend on weather conditions. (On average, batteries require one day of direct sunlight for a full charge).

Battery Care

The Ecoboxx is turned on and off at the master power switch located at the back of the unit. Please remember to always turn off the unit after use!

It is best for you to leave your Ecoboxx plugged into the grid when not in use. If this is not possible, please ensure that your unit is fully charged when stored.

Fully recharge the unit at least every three months as failure to do so can result in permanent damage to the battery.

To keep your battery in optimal condition please re-charge your battery immediately after each discharge.
